Default So, I got Factions, and I have a few Questions (New Player here)

So, at the suggestion of a Gamestop Employee, I went and used the store credit I had on trading in a few games to get Factions. I was going to get the first chapter, Prophecies, but he convinced me otherwise. Now, looking at the thread about which to get, I realize I might have made a mistake, but oh well, I will live with it :P

Anyway, I am trying to figure out what is a good starting profession for a new player. So far, I like the look of the Monk. Also, what suggestions can you give me for starting out? I found these talks of missions and things, but heck if I can find where to start em. Only thing I found so far was the Class Quest where ya get sent cross country to another town...

I get schooled trying to cross that first outdoor area 0_0 And I am not new to these sort of games either... but when you are level 3 and run into a level 15 yeti well there are issues 0_0

If you look around the outpost that you start in, you'll find various NPC's with "!"'s above their heads, each one of them has a quest for you to do to advance your character through the storyline. Some of these quests are what are known as primary quests, they take you directly to the place you need to be and are known as Primary Quests (if you type "L" in game you'll see the different quests you have gotten, seperated out into different categories). Others are not primary and simply give you XP and/or gold, etc.

Alrighty, so I should explore that Monestary I start in after I finish the Tutorial mission is what you are saying?

Also, any suggestions on good starting characters for a person who intends to play mostly solo, at least for now?

suggest a ranger, ele, or war for one of your first chars. They are easier and will help you get a feel for how to play. Don't recommend mesmer, monk, ritualist, or assassin for first char.

as far as what should you do? open your quest log and do the primary quest. follow those to mission outposts, do missions, etc. and that will push you through the game. any side quests you can do at your leisure (and i recommend doing most of them for the experience rewards)

Heh I am in Florida so I got by EST...which would be like 3-4pm my time to talk to ya Darkk. I am at work durin those hours, but thanks for the offer.

I have a ranger made right now, but I am not sure. Why would you suggest not trying a monk? Just curious.

Just thought of something else.

What is a good secondary profession to go with an Elementalist? Would Ranger or Monk work?

First of all, Factions isn't a mistake. It's a very good game, although most people started out somewhere else and learned to like that campaign better. Personally, I like Factions over all of the other ones.
Secondly, I'd say go with whatever profession appeals to you most. People can learn, and I don't think monk is one of the harder professions to learn.

Really, at this point you don't need to worry about classes at all. Just pick whatever you want, and the secondary that appeals to you best. Try them all out, if you want. Later on in the game you get a chance to change your secondary to anything else, and switch it whenever you want to anything.

I find the best way to learn to play GW is just to go out and try things, rather than worrying if you have best class/best armor/best items right from the start. There's nothing you can do to completely mess up your character, unless you're going for certain titles (and those I don't suggest until you've gained some gameplay experience). And if you want, you can even create multiple characters so you can switch between them if you suddenly feel like you don't like what you created. Also, characters can be deleted and then remade, so GW allows for a lot of freedom when trying to find a class that suits you the best.
Just remember to not sell green items, black/white dye and some rare materials to the merchant and you're set to go. You can usually get a better price for them from players.

Primary quests lead you along the intended storyline. When you get to a town with a mission available, you will probably not have any more primary quests to follow until you've done it, so your list will appear empty. Also, a button with the word Enter Mission will appear on your party menu. Normal quests are just quests that you get exp and loot from, usually nothing else.

Hope this helped.

Monk is always useful as a secondary, so you can infinitely resurrect your team. Elementalist works well as a ranger secondary, but I can't think of a good reason to go the other way around. I went Ele/Mesmer with my most reason character and it seems to work well.

Check out guildwiki.org beginner section for checklist of what to accomplish on Shing Jea Island before doing the last mission and leaving for the mainland.
http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Main_Page

They also cover all the gameplay details, including benefits of different secondaries and mission/quest lists.

In Factions, all the quests and missions on Shing Jea are part of the tutorial. Keep to the west side of the island until your levels are up.

Welcome to GW and to guru.
